Description

Flaky pie crust filled with spiced apples and baked to golden perfection. A timeless dessert that's perfect for any season.

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, chilled and diced
  • 1/4 to 1/2 cup ice water
  • 6 cups thinly sliced, peeled apples (Granny Smith or mix)
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine flour and salt. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add ice water, tossing with a fork until dough forms a ball. Divide dough in half and shape into disks. Wrap in plastic and chill for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
  3. In a large bowl, mix sliced apples, sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and lemon juice.
  4. On a lightly floured surface, roll out one disk of dough to fit a 9-inch pie plate. Transfer dough to pie plate.
  5. Fill with apple mixture. Roll out second dough disk; place over filling. Trim, seal edges, and cut slits for steam to escape.
  6. Brush top crust with beaten egg.
  7. Bake 40-45 minutes or until crust is golden and filling is bubbling. Cover edges with foil if browning too quickly.
  8. Cool on wire rack before serving.
